Have you ever been to a restaurant where the menu offers something, often lobster or seafood, for “market price” instead of a set price? Your meal cost is adjusted to a price that reflects how expensive the ingredient is at the time the restaurant buys it. The cost of the ingredient is dependent on the available supply and on how many chefs are interested in the use of it. If supply and demand are equal, market price and market value are equal.

Real Estate is similar. When there is a high supply of property without a high demand, the market price tends to become lower than the market value of the property. In fact as long as there is a high supply of properties it will continue to be an advantage to the buyer. The advantage goes beyond the price as there are many choices available, location, size, floorplans, finishes and more.

So if restaurant A wants to sell the ingredient quickly, the “market price” will be reduced. Is it a deal to get the lobster at a reduced price? Only if it still has the fresh flavor, and maintains its “market value." Restaurant B can continue to sell the same ingredient at a higher “market price” because of freshness, preparation or many other factors.

Is the foreclosure house a deal at “market price”? Only if it is in decent condition or can be restored to “market value”. How does this compare to the home that has a higher “market price,” but is in wonderful condition and is offered at “market value”? You decide. After all the “market price” is determined by what a willing buyer and a willing seller agree upon.

Phlash and his family attended Snow Days at Navy Pier this past weekend.

1st place winner of the Snow Sculpting competition was the 'Sons of Yukon Cornelius' Team, which produced Medusa.

Medusa also won the People's Choice Award!

In addition to the snow sculptures, there was also snowboarding.

HEADLINE (suggested by Mike): Alderman Proco “Joe” Moreno Announces Driver Survival Seminar
For 1st Ward

Did you know the City of Chicago issued 2.75 million parking tickets in 2009?

That's one for every man, woman and child living in this city.
Parking tickets, red light camera tickets, street cleaning, winter parking
bans, the Denver boot are all issues that can make Chicago motorists a
little crazy.

Alderman Proco “Joe” Moreno wants to help 1st ward drivers learn how to
deal with these stressful situations when he presents the Chicago Driver
Survivor Seminar on Saturday, February 5th from 11 AM to 1:30 PM.
This FREE event will be held at Moonshine Bar & Restaurant located at 1824
W. Division Street in the Wicker Park neighborhood.

The Chicago Driver Survival Seminar is a two and a half hour motorist
education boot camp to arm Chicago drivers with the basic tools of
avoiding and fighting parking tickets, understanding and avoiding red
light camera tickets, dealing with speeding and other traffic tickets,
keeping the Denver boot off your car and keeping drivers up to speed on
recent changes to driving laws.

The seminar was created by Mike Brockway (aka The Parking Ticket Geek) the
publisher of The Expired Meter.com (a local website providing news and
advice on driving and parking), to help local drivers get a better
understanding of these issues.

While the Parking Ticket Geek will discuss how to deal with parking
tickets, the National Motorist Association’s Barnet Fagel will speak to
drivers about red light cameras and speeding tickets.

“It’s a way for the ordinary citizen to take steps to protect them self,”
said Fagel. “The seminar will give drivers better insight into how to
navigate Chicago’s challenging streets.”

Because seating is limited, drivers should register for the event at:

recommended that interested motorists respond quickly.

In searching for file photos of Apartment no. 9, I came across these photos I snapped just a few months back, of an artist painting a new mural at The Violet Hour.

I believe, based on the 'after pics' here on this blog, that Tyrue was in the midst of creating an unfortunately short-lived mural, which was a "twilight-hued" traffic stopper, per this Reader story.

Inside Dan's Tackle Service in Bucktown

(Following, in italics, is a mailbag letter from our Jan. 25th Pipeline. More on Dan's in the next pipeline, Feb. 1. .... Following are a few photos that I snapped during a 'pop in' yesterday. A young fisherman named Andy was chatting up Dan on wires and lures and such. Andy was planning to do some fishing on the shores of Indiana today, Sunday)

My name is Brett Mackie and I live in Bucktown. I really dig reading your blog about the community. To that end, I think I have an interesting story for you about an incredibly unique fishing shop with an even more interesting owner here in Bucktown, Dan's Tackle Service. It's somewhat of an underground fishing shop that has been around for the last 30 years directly across the street from Pulaski Elementary School (you'd never know its there however, there is no sign).

At any rate, my friend, who is a much more experienced fly fisherman than I, said the only place I could locate these egg patterns was in South Chicago 40 minutes away. I wasn't about to drive there at the last minute (we were leaving for our trip the next day) so I did a Google search on "Chicago fishing gear" and "Dans Tackle Service" popped up... 3 BLOCKS from my house and 1 BLOCK from my friends house in Bucktown.

Dan's website was pretty poor and hosted on a free godaddy site so we were skeptical it was legit or even still open. Being so close, we made the short walk over to Dan's and were even more skeptical when there was no sign or indication there was a fly shop inside this small 2 story home in a residential neighborhood. We walked in anyways and immediately knew we hit the jackpot. We walked up the stairs and landed in a fully outfitted fly shop - fly tying materials, line, waders, boots, rods, custom rod building, reels, you name it...We hung out with Dan that night for about an hour and learned that he would be closing his doors as soon as he could sell the house. He was in financial debt due to inventory purchases and a slowing economy and the crush of online retail.

So after hearing his story that night a friend and I set out to "SAVE DAN'S." Since then we've managed to keep him in business by building foot traffic and phone orders using Craigslist, email marketing to his contact list and reaching out to fishermen we know. He builds custom rods as well and has been shipping them all over the world for years. We're also working on a new Website for him and trying to get him to start using ebay. We're doing it all pro bono of course and Dan treats us to occasional free or discounted gear and hours of conversation on fly fishing and life in general. He's a whiskey drinker, as are we, so we've had the pleasure of sitting in his shop, tearing into some jazz and whiskey and hearing his story. His goal is to leave the house "Feet First"...and to that end we're trying to make sure it happens.

Aldermanic Debate - Wednesday, Feb. 2 6:30 PM
All of the 32nd Ward aldermanic candidates are invited to a moderated forum in the field house auditorium at Holstein Park Wednesday, February 2 at 6:30 PM. The forum is sponsored by the Bucktown Community Organization (BCO). Everyone is welcome.

Teen Tubing Trip - Thursday, Feb. 10 4:30 PM
All teens in the after school program are invited to go on a teen tubing trip to La Villa Resort in Hanover Park. The bus leaves at 4:30 PM from Holstein (please be there by 4:15) and will return around 10 PM. For more information, call Shannon at the park. 312-742-7554.

Teen Valentine Dance - Friday, Feb. 11 7-9 PM (ages 12 - 15)
Hearts afire! It's the annual Holstein Park Teen Valentine Dance for kids ages 12 - 15. Featuring refreshments, cool sounds, and fun lights! Rap Master K will be spinning and there's plenty of dance floor to fill. If you want to attend, make sure you sign up in advance at the Friends of Holstein Park website. Suggested donation is $2.

This is a DATE TO REMEMBER. Online registration for all Spring programs begins promptly at 9 AM . . . and most programs are filled by 10! Mom & Tots, After School, Spring Sports Camp, special sports days. Go to www.chicagoparkdistrict.com and hit Holstein Park in the pulldown menu. You will be asked to pay with a credit card. If you want to find out all the programs the park district offers at Holstein and all the other parks, more information will be available on the park district site beginning Monday, January 31. There will be no walk-in registration at Holstein Park this year.

Friends of Holstein Park - Tuesday, Feb. 15 6:30 PM
Want to get involved in your park? For starters, check out our very cool new website at www.friendsofholsteinpark.com to see all the activities coming up this year. Then stop by the monthly meeting at 6:30 PM on the third Tuesday of every month. There's always something cooking in the idea factory.

CAPS Meeting - Thursday, Feb. 17 6:30 PM
The monthly community and police meeting takes place every third Thursday of the month in the Holstein Park auditorium. This is your chance to express your public safety concerns and meet the people who are out on the street every day protecting you.

President's Day - Monday, Feb. 21
Moms, Pops & Tots classes will take place as scheduled, but there will be no After School program or evening sports because the field house will be closed at 3 PM.

Election Day - Tuesday, Feb. 22
Don't forget to vote in one of the most exciting city elections in decades. If no candidate receives over 50 percent of the vote, there will be a second run-off election on April 5.

Spring programs start March 28. Does that mean it's time to pull out the old bat & ball?

Photos from the Rahm Rally, Tues. Jan. 25

Awoke at 6:30AM today (Sunday) to work on Tuesday's pipeline. Yesterday I had to work at day job from 9AM-1PM, gotta love Saturday hours, and had been up at 7AM. After work I walked around town most of the day. Around 9PM last night I was at Easy Bar on Division and falling asleep on a friend. I went home to crash, and my friend went off to cover the 11PM show at Chopin that will be included in the next pipeline (FEB 1).

My desktop Mac keeps crashing, so I just deleted close to 2,000 pictures...

Now, the desktop is restarting and I am hoping it will run more smoothly for when Phlash pops by and uploads his images.

Speaking of Phlash, he was bummed out this past week that I did not include his Rahm rally pictures which were submitted post-deadline.

The few days leading up to Tuesday's pipeline are pretty hellish.

I try to photo edit my week's worth of photos on Sunday and finish the intro, community news, tidbits, and calendar, with only about half of the said getting done. On Monday night, after nine or so hours of being in a cube, I receive stories from others which I edit and integrate into the pipeline, including at least 100 photos by Phlash.

I force myself to go to bed by 1AM on late/Monday/early Tuesday, so that I can awake at 5AM and have 2.5 solid, quiet hours before dashing off to work. Then, I return home from work Tuesday night around 7PM where I address edits from Pat, who edits/proof reads during the day. Often I work til Midnight on Tuesday, then awake at 4:30 or 5AM Wednesday, and hit the "SEND" button right before I go to work.

And then it starts all over again-- reading emails throughout the week, beginning with replies to the email I've just sent out, assigning stories, following up on leads, taking pictures, 'walking the streets' almost the entire day Saturday like I did yesterday and part of Sunday, with production beginning Sunday early evening.

So, that's my life.
