Eyeporium Gallery presents “Empty Stages”

CHICAGO, Illinois – August 29, 2010 – Eyeporium Gallery presents a group show of highly personalized cityscapes by Mary Livoni, Charlie B Thorne and Karen Hoyt. For Livoni, charcoal is a seductive drawing material because, like smoke, it can be dense and impenetrable or ethereal and light. She takes her inspiration from partially inhabited, sometimes crumbling, industrial Chicago neighborhoods that she imbues with her own sense of drama. Her collages are the result of destroying and reconfiguring her own work. Thorne turns late afternoon-lit urban landscapes into haunting vignettes in his color saturated oil pastels. His micro-miniatures are hand-colored paper sculptures of city structures displaying exquisite detail, complexity and sly wit. Hoyt records the fleeting details of our modern environment, having been created by and for man, but devoid of man at the time. She edits her photographs down to strict, structural lines that deliver both power and poignancy suffuse with tight color play. Each artist, in their own way, offers scenes poised for animation. Okay, cue the actors.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Mary Livoni holds a BFA from Kansas City Art Institute. She has lived and worked in Chicago for the last 20 years. Her work has been shown at Architrove Gallery, Bluebird Restaurant – Salon Series, Zolla/Liebermann Gallery, Gary Marks Gallery and Thomas McCormick Gallery. Charlie B Thorne attended the American Academy of Art, Chicago. A native Chicagoan, he has been exhibited internationally by Belloc-Lowndes Fine Art as well as many local venues including Eyeporium Gallery, the Chicago Cultural Center and as an early participant in Around the Coyote. Karen Hoyt, originally from Florida, has been living and working in Chicago for the last 20 years as a freelance commercial and event photographer.

A Year in Humboldt Park is the Naturalist Photo Essay of the Year 2009 by Dina Petrakis in one of Jensen's designed parks. The art show at Humboldt Park Boat House was curated by Candice Martens with collaboration by Gerald Ritchie. Repeating images of iconic Park views and individual photographs reflect the richness and diversity of a life cycle in the Park.
THIS ELECTRONIC SLIDE PRESENTATION allows us to see MORE of the Photographsof the Life Cycle of the Jens Jensen Landscape and its inhabitants. This event is meant to extend our vision of what occured during those 365 days in more detail and how Dina Petrakis choose to document what she viewed while in the park. How did she choose her shots, subjects, time of day to shoot, etc? The electronic media of the projected slide allows us to see many more transitions than does the mounted printed photo exhibit.
THE AUDIENCE will experience the transitions in the Jens Jensen landscape and be able to discuss many landscape design questions:
1. Does the Jensen landscape hold up in all four seasons?
2. What works - what doesn't work in respect to texture, color, transition, etc?
3. How does the landscape change during time and how is it orchestrated?
4. What changes would you make in the Jensen design?

In advance of this weekend's Beyond the Coyote Arts Festival, we popped in at the WPB-Sponsored First Friday at the Flat Iron Building this past Friday night.
Though many studios were open, we had just a couple of hours, thus here are a few of the friendly faces we encountered (though many more FIAA resident artists can be seen at this Flat Iron Artist directory page).

Speaking of new tenants, the 15-year-old Collaboraction Theatre Co. just relocated to the Flat Iron Artists Association Building and is now occupying Suite 332. The five year lease will bring theatre to the building, in an intimate performance space that can accommodate up to 90 guests. Several friends and I have lost jobs as a result of Ron Huberman's policies that have been implemented and which violate our contract.
We are looking for different places to tell our story.

BYOB(inoculars) in Humboldt Park: Sat. Sept 4
This Saturday there are three events happening in Humboldt Park, just west of The Pipeline's usual coverage area.
Thanks to Doug Wood of the Wicker Park Garden Club for the news on the events, all of which are free and will take place inside the park's boathouse, 1359 N. Sacramento.
1-4 PM – Art Show Hours – View Dina Petrakis’ Photos of A Year in Humboldt Park.
1PM - Janine Fron will lead rounds of playing Prairie Prose with visitors to the gallery. The locally made green game was inspired by Jens Jensen and Prairie School History in which players create poems from nature. The game enables players to learn the names of plants used by Jensen and philosophies of the Prairie School of Architects and their colleagues. As a post-game challenge, folks can go outside and try to find the plants, shrubs, and trees on their own time.
3PM - Presentation of Birds of Humboldt Park, a report by Sam Burckhardt, which will include the birds Sam and others have encountered in the park, survey of breeding birds, and the significance of the park for migrating and resident birds. Afterward, bird enthusiasts will move to the terrace overlooking the lagoon and see what birds can be seen from there. Note: Please, bring your binoculars if you have a pair.

Are you ready for a circus?
Last weekend's Bucktown Arts Fest was a marvelous celebration of all that's good in our community. Our thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who helped make it happen. Now come more thrills, chills, spills - and pie - as Holstein Park goes into the busy fall season.
Pool Closes - LABOR DAY, Monday Sept 6
The last lap swimmers must be out of the pool by 5:15 PM before the park drains the pool for the winter. Ah summer, you were far too short this year.
Zephyr Dance Concerts - Thurs, Fri, Sat Sept 9 - 11
Arts Partner Zephry Dance holds it fall concert series at 7:30 PM on Thursday and Friday, and 2 PM Saturday in the field house auditorium. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.
Little Kickers Soccer - Starts Saturday, Sept 11
Little Kickers Soccer starts up this Saturday and continues every Saturday through Halloween. The schedule is: 9:30 - 10:30 AM - 4-year-olds ...... 10:30 - 11:30 AM - 5 and 6-year olds ...... 11:30 - 12:30 PM - 7,8 and 9-year olds.
Friends of Holstein Park - Thursday, Sept 16 6:30 PM
The Friends of Holstein Park have two big events coming up in the next month, Circus in the Park (Sept. 25-26) and the Bucktown Apple Pie Contest (Oct. 10).
If you can volunteer on any of those days, your help will be much appreciated. This is the last monthly meeting before showtime. So please stop by. A lot of work goes into staging these events, and it's easier if the load is spread around. Plus, it's fun.
And it's a twofer: The CAPS community police meeting is 7 PM the same night in the auditorium.

"Ghostbusters" Movie in the Park - Friday, Sept 17
The last movie in the park will be "Ghostbusters" --and this one isn't at Holstein or Churchill Park, but nearby Haas Park (Washtenaw and Fullerton).
The movie begins at dusk (now estimated to be around 7:30 PM). Bring your own lawn chair and picnic basket.
Fall Programs - start Monday, Sept 20
Regular fall programs - notably the After School Program for 6-12 year olds and Moms, Pops and Tots - start their regular schedule Monday and continue until the Christmas break.
There are still a few openings for younger children (ages 18-months to 4) in selected programs. Call Megan at the Holstein field house to find out more. 312-742-7554.
Open Gym - Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 - 8:30 PM
Starting Tuesday, September 21, Holstein Park opens its gym for pick-up basketball games or shoot-arounds to adults over 18. This is a good way to connect with one of the teams in our famous 4-on-4 winter basketball league - or form your own team.
There is a one-time fee of $35 to use the gym for the season.
Indoor Soccer - Starts Wednesday, Sept 22
If you've seen the size of our gyms, this may sound crazy. But people are flocking to Holstein Park on Wednesday nights for 3-on-3 indoor soccer. Teams rotate on the floor and stay, or leave, based on who won the last match. There is a one-time fee of $17 for the season.
Circus in the Park - Saturday and Sunday, Sept 25-26
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, step right up to the latest offering in Holstein Park's array of special events: The Midnight Circus brings its collection of acrobats, aerialists, clowns, contortionists and one trained dog to Holstein Park for four shows Saturday (2 PM and 5 PM) and Sunday (1 PM and 4 PM). Tickets are $15 and may be purchased in advance at www.CircusintheParks.com.
Holstein is one of five parks that have banded together to raise money by presenting the circus in a different park every weekend. Other venues include Gompers Park (Sept. 11-12), Welles Park (Sept. 18-19), Portage Park (Oct. 9-10) and Chase Park (Oct. 16-17).
If you can't make it to the Holstein Park shows, visit another park on another weekend. All proceeds are shared by the participating parks.

And Finally . . .
Save the date: Sunday, October 10 . . . for the 6th annual Bucktown Apple Pie Contest. This will be the biggest and best ever with up to 150 contestants, music by Tangleweed, kids activities, pony rides and, yes . . . square dancing! Underground Jazz Fest at Toyota Lounge
In this week's pipeline I did not include the Underground Jazz Fest, which will take place this weekend at the Toyota Creative Lounge at Six Corners. Jazz lovers, click on image to enlarge and view the lineup!
