Beat Cop's Guide to Chicago Eats Pops in at Quimby's
Sgt. David Haynes & Christopher Garlington Discuss
The Beat Cop's Guide to Chicago Eats at Quimby's 6/14
Join Sgt. David J. Haynes of the Chicago Police Department, and his partner-in-crime, blogger Christopher Garlington as they talk about the places where they take a bite out of crime and also bites out of donuts, polish sausage, fried chicken, enchiladas, and omelettes. Peppered with outrageous stories from working cops, Chicago cop lore, and even a few recipes, The Beat Cop's Guide To Chicago Eats takes you on a gustatory journey through all five Chicago areas, including some of the toughest neighborhoods in the nation.
Sgt. David J. Biscuit Haynes has spent the past 15 years dodging bullets and chasing down gang bangers on the city's West Side, running Chicago's first ever Homeland Security Task Force, and supervising squads in the 19th District at Belmont and Western. Christopher "The Bull" Garlington is a blogger and author, known for his stories of raising highly intelligent (devious) children published on the blog Death by Children. His writing has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Another Realm, Bathhouse, The Dead Mule School of Southern Literature and more. Together Haynes and Garlington have hosted the radio program The Dave & Chris Show! since 2007, during which they cultivate and maintain a long-standing argument about...everything. From politics and video games to the importance of cool nicknames and secret societies, they cover it on their live weekly broadcast from cigar stores, bars, and other manly locales around Chicago. Their show first aired on WJJG and is now broadcast online on blogtalk radio.
The book retails at $15.95 and includes $34 in coupons. It's like being buddies with your alderman. For more info: lakeclaremont.com

The Week Past, the Week Ahead
Here is a link to the May 24 pipeline...
As for the week ahead, we will be very busy working on the We're in the Neighborhood booklet.
It is very exciting yet very scary at the same time. Lots to do, lots already done, and way more to go.

'Liberation Summer' Breezes into Monique Meloche Gallery, Bringing Messages and Markings, with Boots, too!
How can you create a painting, without using paint? For artist Kendell Carter, the answer was shoelaces, which, when layered together, look like three dimensional paint strokes.
How can you create a painting without painting on a canvas? Could you paint heavy layers onto a canvas, and then carefully peel the paint off, and then cut it into strips and weave it together, so that the paint itself serves as a canvas, case in point being this extremely intriguing piece which hangs on the gallery's front-door-facing wall, greeting you as you walk inside of Liberation Summer?
Liberation Summer, occurring all summer long at Division Street's Monique Meloche Gallery (well, actually just until July 30) is full of color, and labels, and gold hip hop chains splayed out among silhouettes, comprising a myriad of references that have "marked" elements of what artist Kendell Carter refers to as "Subjective Blackness." When juxtaposed against casual cultural markings and literal interpretations of 'mark,' as in a perhaps tongue-and-cheek illustrative shout out to white hip-hopper, Mark Wahlberg, the result is an exhibit that feels as fresh and striking to the viewer as it likely did for its creator, whom, per gallery curator Monique, reported that he was most inspired by challenging traditional art making during the making of Liberation Summer.
Indeed, "How do you make a painting without paint?" is only the beginning of the dialogue one imagines having occurred between the artist and himself during the creative process.
The work of Kendell Carter (American, born New Orleans 1970) has been reviewed in Art in America, ArtFoum.com, and the Los Angeles Times among other esteemed publications. Thus, we will not pretend to pretend we know anything about writing about serious art like Carter's, though we suggest anyone reading this seriously check out the show soon! You might never see gleaming copper cast work boots shining in the summer sun anywhere else. Regardless of whether or not you've got the dough or desire to purchase fine art, it's not about the money when you are standing in front of something that someone else has gone to great lengths to create and you're just fortunate to be able to marvel at it, and then move along, a bit calmer than you were when you walked in. Great art, like Carter's, soothes the nerves of a driftless griot.

Oprah Miracle Rally- Photos by Philin Phlash
OK, I know we are technically an e-newsletter covering just Wicker Park and Bucktown, but Phlash is the kind of man who knows no borders and seems to be everywhere.
This past week there was a big Oprah rally downtown, or something related to Oprah, I'm not sure, but I do know that Oprah's departure will be a huge loss to Chicago, especially for jobs when you stop to think about all of the people who either work at Harpo Studios, or do contract work with Harpo, and the tons of restaurants and eateries like Wishbone near Harpo Studios that will lose a lot of business since tourists won't be making mecca journeys to Oprah's studio anymore.
It's a good thing we all survived yesterday's non-Rapture. The real question is, how much of a hit will our local economy take without Oprah helping to propel it up?
She's 'bigger than all get out'- and she's out of here too. :(

Philosophy
"Philosophy", a two act play, focuses on two people: Dawn and Patrick. Dawn is a young woman and recent college graduate on a search for self-awareness while Patrick, a less-young man, is an armchair philosopher whose cynicism makes him withdraw from things like love. When the two meet at a book club meeting, they hit it off with philosophical discussions about God, fate and meaning. Dawn is eager to push their relationship forward, but Patrick is cynical and heartbroken, and resists, causing their frequent philosophical chats to take an unexpected turn.

Inside M&C Restaurant and Lounge
We popped by M C Vietnamese French Restaurant & Lounge, at 1401 N. Ashland, this past weekend, and took advantage of the the $6.95 daily special consisting of a Vietnamese grilled sub, featuring grilled chicken, a house pickle, Jalapeno, salt/pepper... AND, perhaps best of all, a tall domestic beer in a cold and frothy glass.
Though we were about to go, the drizzling rain outside and our lack of an umbrella proved to be the perfect opportunity to stay a bit longer, and continue to converse with bartender and host, Cobus, right, who is new to Chicago after having moved here from North Carolina just a few weeks ago.
Cobus got the gig at M C through his friend, whose mother, Julie Mai, owns the restaurant and cooks all food from scratch in the kitchen, save for the bahn mi bread which, per Cobus, comes from a bakery up north.
To our discerning taste buds (or rather, we just eat a lot of bahn mi due to being a regular at our neighbor, Bon Bon Vietnamese Sandwiches!) the bread tasted very familiar and as tasty as ever.
The best part of the meal was dessert, which we do not typically eat but decided to let loose, given the fact that menu item #39, aka the under-promising-over-delivering deceptively simple "Baked Banana" was just $3.95 and we were kind of in the mood to celebrate a Lazy Sunday Afternoon. What better way to do that then by slurping down a very sweet soup comprised of coconut milk, tapioca pudding, baked bananas, covered with a layer of crushed peanuts?
Bucktown Alley Dispatch: Longest Yo-Yo String World Record
When James Buffington was eight years old, his parents took him to see the Smothers Brothers, where one of the comedians used a yo-yo in his act. During the show's intermission, James purchased a yo-yo from a vendor.
Flash forward 25 or so years, and James is 33, founder of the Chicago Yo-Yo Club, and at a sewing store in his hometown of southwest suburban Shorewood, purchasing polyester sewing thread so he can hand-thread his Aquarius brand yo-yo, because, as he tells it, "cotton would snap," at least considering the length he wants to go: the longest documented usable yo-yo string ever, a feat that will likely make it into the Guinness Book of World Records if all goes as planned and James smashes the existing Guiness record of 35-ft, and 2 inches.
This past Saturday, a swarm of curious onlookers, Jason's parents, Sherry and Joel, yo-yo club members like 13-year-old twins Cally and Jack (who are 'Expert 1' level yo-yoers and chatted briefly with the pipeline), and expert witnesses like Mary and Anita, founders of the Chicago International Toy & Game Fair trade show, waited in the alley alongside Bucktown's Cat & Mouse Game Store, as James and his trusty Aquarius yo-yo took to the roof of the building.
Official architect Alec Lisec (who by day works in affordable housing planning) was on the scene, using a laser measuring device to determine length along the side of the building.
Among those in the crowd who personally know James, there was a lot of confidence that he'd break the record. "He did it in St. Louis," Sherry told me, adding that it was not fully documented and thus would not be eligible for Guinness Book of World Record consideration. We were standing alongside trash bins in the alley, waiting for James to re-thread his tangled Aquarius. His first attempt was a no-go.
Thankfully, the second attempt went a bit smoother, though James fumbled the catch and did not catch the Aquarius firmly in the palm of his hand, which is a requirement.
By the third attempt, The Pipeline was admittedly getting a bit nervous for James, wondering if this would be it, or if there would be a fourth or even fifth attempt. We held out breath, hit play on our video, and rooted for James to catch the yo-yo.
And he did!
The crowd went wild!
I cheered like a freak on the video, forgetting that it records audio too!
Per architect, Alec, James & the Aquarius yo-yo descended 39 ft. 9 5/16" inches!!
There was immediate talk of going for 40-feet, and breaking his own record (if anyone is curious, the length of an average yo-yo string is 3-4 ft), though the crowd started to disburse, and by then this e-newsletter realized she should check out a new cafe, Sacco Bruno, up the street from Cat & Mouse, at the corner of Leavitt & Armitage, before it closed for the day, on its first official day of business. Indeed, it was just another Saturday on the 'streets of Wicker Park' and Bucktown, where we've been wandering around since April of 2009. But the longest usable yo-yo thread was for sure the biggest story we covered this past week. At least in our book. Congrats, James!

Spaces with Eva Bergant: "Let's Be Careful Out There"
On occasion, there are questions that some buyers ask, like How safe is this neighborhood? Or, Who else lives in this building?, which are never answered by their Realtor, because to do so would be in violation of the Fair Housing Act.
In compliance with the FHA, all Realtors must provide equal professional service without regard to the race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin or sexual orientation of any prospective client, customer, or of the residents of any community. A Realtor may not encourage any group into or away from any property.
In Chicago, there is public information available through the Chicago Police Department website. Here is the link to the ClearMap for Bucktown, where it's very easy to go to any area of the city and find valuable information.
As the line goes in Hill Street Blues - "Let’s Be Careful Out There."
Regardless of where you live, crimes happen in every neighborhood, and no one is immune to it, so please be safe!

Weekend Edition: 11 Things You Could Do This Weekend
OK, it just took me almost two hours to put this email together, highlighting 11 Things You Could Do in the 'Hood this weekend.
Newsletter writing appears deceptively easy, but there is a lot of time involved in writing, attending events, taking pictures, photo editing, inserting links and such.
While we know there's easily 11 more things we could focus on, there is a danger in trying to be too comprehensive all of the time. 1) You lose time because you're trying to include everything people send you and 2) In an ironic twist of fate, you can't go to any events because you are holed up in front of a wretched computer.
And with that note, I'm just about out of here.
Happy Weekend.
