CHICAGO, Illinois – October XX, 2011 – Three Chicago artists ring in the holiday season on a surrealistic note with a show of mixed-media sculptures and figurative drawings. The sculptural works range in theme from mythical archetypes to wry commentary on the human condition to…flying whales. Recent life drawings, many of which were created at the Studio/Gallery’s Sunday workshop, pay homage to each artist’s grounding in the human form.

The artists will be on hand at the reception to share lively dialog on their inspiration and process.

Opening Reception (public invited) - Friday, December 9, 2011 from 5:00 to 9:00pm.

Exhibition: Through Thursday, January 5, 2012.

ABOUT TOM ROBINSON STUDIO/GALLERY:

Tom Robinson -- artist, curator, arts administrator, competition founder and judge, teacher, innovator -- has been a driving force in the Chicago art scene for over 30 years. “I never tire of the ways different artists see and capture the same scene”, says Robinson. “The real difference comes from how the artists direct their attention.”

What, what's that you say for a kid's manicure? $5?

How young is too young to get a manicure? The answer is up to you. Bring your young princesses into Asia Nails, 2051 W. North Ave. and the friendly family focused team will see what they can do about making her hands look super cute. Fun fact: Boo-Palooza is coming, and Shayla just painted a ghost onto a young lady's thumbnail. Check out the ghost, and if you stop by, be sure to check out Asia Nail's newly remodeled digs, too. Having recently painted three rooms myself and having done a horrendous job, I can certainly admire those who get out the paintbrushes and cans to take a break painting walls, especially when they'd otherwise be painting fingernails.

"We did it during the night," Tina said of the remodeling job.

Now until Oct. 31st, get a manicure for your pint-sized little one for just $5, with the mention of "ghost." Then you can explain to your little one what ghosts are, via Wikipedia. Photos courtesy of Shayla, who is quite the shutterbug.

$28 for manicure/pedicure at Asia Nails

Asia Nails, 2051 W. North, is under new ownership as well as newly remodeled, and the vibe inside is more festive than ever before, in large part because an entire family is now involved in making the salon just west of the Milw/Damen/North intersection a success.

Andy, Tina, and their daughter, Shayla all work together at the salon, along with two of Shayla's cousins, Katie and Zenny.

Having been a semi-regular Asia Nail customer since 2005, I noticed the changes as well as some bananas at the front reception area. At first, being the glutton that I am, I incorrectly assumed that perhaps the bananas were for customers. It was not such a far stretch of the imagination, as the salon's previous owner, an elderly woman who always had a rotating staff, put out a dish of candy at the front counter.

Then I looked up and noticed that the bananas were in front of a Buddha statue.

"They [the bananas] are for Buddha," Andy, the salon's owner, informed me. Andy added that the statue is for good luck.

Speaking of good luck, we hope that Asia Nails receives lots of it too. We look forward to including Asia Nail's coupon in the upcoming Celebrate! printed magazine, featuring lots of local businesses and people and more coupons and deals than our first printed effort.

Until then, go get a manicure. You may not be able to afford the time out or the $, but you will feel better, plus you can rub Buddha's belly for your own good luck on the way out.
