Sound OFF, by Philin Phlash
Sound OFF: In the City of Big Shoulders, Do We Ask What Colors Shoulders Are?
By Philin Phlash
In this day and age, does it matter that Derrick Rose has black shoulders, or Jay Cutler has white shoulders?
No, not in our world. What we care about is that they are good at what they do. Period.
People care that these guys go out on the court or field and give 100% or more to win. They try their best, and really, that's all the public can ask. Try hard for us, for Chicago, our kind of town. Make the people of the Windy City proud. We live- work- love- evolve here, in the great city of Chicago.
So, I ask you all, WHO SHALL RUN OUR CITY? Who shall work at this game 100% to make it better for everyone, all shoulders. This should not be a "Race-Race" in Chicago, but a "Who Will do the best job?" race. Flores, Fioretti, Dart, Meeks, Davis, all great men, could've been any of them, but now they are out. Who is in to win? Who loves this city? Who thinks it's worth fighting for?
The song on the radio, you only hear the music, or that guitar you love, the guitar which is supported by a strap which goes over a big shoulder. Is it Hendrix, or Stevie Ray, Santana, or Dylan? It doesn't matter. You will love the song, the message, the love, and the artist depending on your own individual taste of what style and what's right for you. No one can tell you how to feel, but we all want to feel like winners. We are responsible for our own actions, so take actions in 2011, and "turn it up to 11," bring it on, sing your song, make a dent and change the world for the better. Help your fellow man, and be the woman or man that you are meant to be!

Manila Envelopes
There are many manila envelopes associated with my job.
I have a sliding drawer that is many times completely full of manila envelopes.
One of the main chores of my job is to give these manila envelopes to
people who walk in and ask for them.
They say, "Hello."
I in turn also give them a greeting.
They tell me who they are and that they want a manila envelope.
I open the big sliding drawer that has all of the manila envelopes in
it and look for the manila envelope that corresponds with their
particular name.
If I find it, then I hand it to them, and they are very happy to
receive their manila envelope.
Then we make humorous jokes at each other.
Like: "Workin' hard, or hardly workin'?"
And then we just laugh and laugh and laugh.
But sometimes there is not a manila envelope for someone that comes in.
I open the big sliding drawer with all of the manila envelopes in it,
and I look for the manila envelope that corresponds with their
particular name.
"I have no manila envelopes for you in the big sliding drawer, perhaps
there's been some mistake." I tell them while standing up and walking
back into where there might be other manila envelopes.
I look frantically for a manila envelope for the individual who wants
one with their own name on it.
"We have no manila envelopes for you today." I tell them sadly.
They look down at the ground while their eyes water and say, "I will
check for my manila envelope tomorrow."

Marx - Expressive Lines, Texture, Color
Exciting Designs Utilizing an Artist-Botanist Palette and Sensibility in Landscape Design
Join Gary Lehman as he discusses the work and practice of Roberto Burle Marx and his influence on landscape design. Roberto Burle Marx was inspirational figure for landscape architects as he merged interests in painting, botany, and gardening. His unique character captured expressive lines in the landscape and his understanding of the planting and ecology surrounding it.
Mr. Lehman will discuss how this organic and expressive style was applied in a variety of mediums particularly in gardens. Additional attention will show how this styling and approach is applied to other contemporary designers.
Gary Lehman introduced G Studio (www.gstudiodesign.net ) with 12 years of experience at reputable firms including Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects, Carol R. Johnson and Associates (now CRJA), HNTB Corporation, Wolff Clements and Associates (now Wolff Landscape Architecture), Thompson Dyke & Associates, and Landscapes Unlimited. This work includes all scales of work from residential to town center design and range in scope from concept design to construction administration. This experience includes coordination with architects, engineers, developers, homeowners, university institutions, municipal departments, and planning organizations. The breadth of this work is broad and brings a phenomenal level of quality, intelligence, and exposure for every project.

New in 2011: FUN!
I'm serious about having fun, because I've determined that if I'm not having fun with the pipeline, it's not worth doing in my free time, aka nights, early mornings, weekends. This is my final Monday where I have the luxury of writing and editing all day long on a Monday. I'm going to enjoy every minute of it.
This past new year's was one of the best ever.... So fun that I am still having a difficult time in terms of getting back to my regular routine of obsessively documenting the neighborhood. It took a lot of energy to convince myself that what I need to do is get back into the saddle, for myself, for phlash, pat, dika, and-- new!- a new helper, "Wolverang" who is not of this neighborhood, but will be a contributor. Wolverang has an audio device used in some radio projects, so if I figure out how to integrate audio interviews in the pipeline, we will use those too! Yesterday we interviewed a few business owners as well as a few citizens and delved into the historic bar "project."
So, back to work. Happy first Monday of the year.
