Holstein Happenings
Feb 1, 2012

Love Month!
There's a lot going on at Holstein Park this February, but here's some news that will help you participate in park programs through the whole coming year.

The Chicago Park District has re-designed its website to REQUIRE users to establish a personal account before signing up for any programs or events. Before registering for Spring programs (Feb. 21), for instance, you should get your account set up in advance. With your account, you will no longer pay for programs via Paypal -- the Park District will have its own system for processing credit cards -- and you will be able to receive text and/or emails about program changes.

Starting on Feb. 6, you will also be able to search the Spring program offerings at Holstein Park more easily. The park district site is www.chicagoparkdistrict.com. Now what's happening closer to home?

Drop-In Yoga - Saturday mornings 9:30-10:30 AM
This Saturday, and every Saturday through the middle of March, adults are invited to join Zephyr Artistic Director Michelle Kranicke for an hour of yoga in the auditorium. Each session is $12. (Bring your own mat.) Call 773-489-5069 or email zephyr@zephyrdance.com for more information.
Teen Valentine Dance - Friday, Feb. 10 4 - 7 PM

Teenagers between the ages of 12 and 15 are invited to celebrate the season with dance and refreshments in the auditorium. The rumor is DJStix will be spinning. But parental permission is required, so get your sign-up form at the field house.

Family Valentine Dance - Saturday, Feb. 11 3 - 5 PM

The decorations are still up, the dance floor is still warm, so moms and dads are invited to bring their own kids (ages 3 - 8) to Holstein Park for a family Valentine Dance Saturday afternoon. Light refreshments, including a chocolate fountain, will be available.

Paper Crafts Workshop - Saturday, Feb. 11 10 AM - 2 PM
The Bucktown Arts Fest is sponsoring three arts workshops for adults and children this winter, and there are still openings for new participants.

Every Monday night, for instance, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, the Arts Fest is holding adult drawing sessions in the auditorium (preceded by drawing classes for kids ages 8 - 12 from 3:30 to 5:30 PM.)

And this Saturday, February 11, they will hold a Paper Crafts workshop for children (ages 4-5) from 10 AM to 2 PM with an advanced workshop for children ages 8-12 from 11:45 to 12:45 PM. (Younger children should be accompanied by an adult.)

And mark your calendar for another adult Jewelry Making workshop on Saturday, March 10 from noon to 4 PM. A small fee applies to each session.Learn more by calling Shannon at the fieldhouse 312-742-7554.

Friends of Holstein Park - Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 7PM

Thanks to everyone who turned out for our annual elections in January. It was more exciting than a Florida primary. So now, without further ado, here are Your 2012 FOHP officers and directors:

Michelle Pennington, president; Lucy Jacobs, secretary; Sara Dudnik, treasurer; Jean Alan, Robert Allan, Scott Jacobs, Kathy Rice, Fred Schein and Dave Sundry, directors.

Stop by and see how you can join the fun.
Online Registration - Spring Programs - Tuesday, Feb. 21 9 AM
Holstein Park has a wide range of programs this Spring (starting April 6) that can only be signed up for online at the Park District site. Arts & Crafts, T-ball, Moms & Tots. Our programs are among the first to fill up, so it is important to search the offerings ahead of time, and be ready to make your selections when the buzzer sounds at 9 AM.

Please remember: Under the new park district web design, you must GET AN ACCOUNT IN ADVANCE to facilitate your sign-up. Good luck!
AND FINALLY . . .
Ain't this weather grand?

AND FINALLY . . .
We want to thank all those who contributed to the success of the Apple Pie Contest, including Tipsy Cake for delicious baked goods, Ipsento Coffee, Reza's for the wonderful rugs that decorated the stage, and Marvelous Masks for the kids face painting. Holstein Happenings

Be Safe Out There . . .
GANG ACTIVITY ALERT - Friday, April 1
Police District Commander Linda Flores says rival gang activity around Holstein Park - especially along N. Oakley from Lyndale south to Armitage - is causing teenagers to tag garages in the alleys and otherwise mark their territory.

If you observe gang activity on your block, please call police commander Linda Flores (14th district) at 312-744-1330 or Ald. Scott Waguespack (or his assistant Kerri Stojack) at 773-248-1330. Now is the time to nip this in the bud.

ONLINE REGISTRATION Summer Programs - Mon, April 4 9 AM

If you want to sign up for Holstein Park summer programs - kid's camp, sports, pool activities, etc. - make sure you are at your computer this coming Monday bright and early at 9 AM.

All Holstein program registration will be online this year (no walk-up) and you will have about five minutes before all the slots will fill. It sounds crazy. It is. But here's a tip to parents who can't get into the Holstein summer camp. SIGN UP for the HAAS PARK summer camp.

Haas is only five blocks away and because its field house is under construction, Haas will be running a summer camp for kids (ages 6 -12) that mirrors ours and uses all the same Holstein Park facilities.

You can learn more about the Haas Park program by calling Haas park superintendent Joe Henry at 312-742-7554. Added bonus: Haas does offer WALK-UP registration at the Holstein Park field house starting at 9 AM on Saturday, April 9.
MEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP - Thurs, April 14 6:30 PM

Holstein Park has the best 4-4 amateur basketball league in the city. Come see who wins it all this year. Playoffs start Tuesday, April 12, and the championship game will be Thursday around 6:30 PM in the upstairs gym.
EGG HUNT - Saturday, April 16 10 AM
Come one, come all. But only if you are between the ages of 2 and 9 - or accompanied by a minor. The annual Holstein egg hunt in Senior Citizens park is now so popular the park requires pre-registration at the Friends of Holstein Park website.

There will actually be two egg hunts: The first for 3-9 year-olds will be at 10 AM. Once the first group is gone, the eggs can be re-hidden and there will be a second egg hunt around 10:30 AM. Parents are always welcome to help. You can volunteer when you register online or email Michele Pennington at mrwerle@gmail.com - or just pitch in when you get there.

It sounds complicate. It's not. It's a free-for-all.
EARTH DAY - Saturday, April 16 Noon
The Bucktown Community Organization (BCO) is looking for volunteers to help clean up a couple neighborhood parks on Earth Day.

People will be out seeding the lawn and re-stocking the sandbox at Erlher Park. The newly formed Friends of Churchill Dog Park will also be power-washing and cleaning the Churchill dog area on Damen. Both activities start around noon. .
FRIENDS OF HOLSTEIN - Tuesday, April 19 6:30 PM Now is the time to give back. Come to the monthly meeting of The Friends of Holstein to discover how you can get involved in the Bucktown Arts Fest, Circus in The Parks and The Bucktown Apple Pie Contest this year. There are plenty of opportunities to help. And volunteering is fun!
And Finally . . .

Holstein Happenings
September 1, 2010

Are you ready for a circus?

Last weekend's Bucktown Arts Fest was a marvelous celebration of all that's good in our community. Our thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who helped make it happen. Now come more thrills, chills, spills - and pie - as Holstein Park goes into the busy fall season.

Pool Closes - LABOR DAY, Monday Sept 6
The last lap swimmers must be out of the pool by 5:15 PM before the park drains the pool for the winter. Ah summer, you were far too short this year.

Zephyr Dance Concerts - Thurs, Fri, Sat Sept 9 - 11

Arts Partner Zephry Dance holds it fall concert series at 7:30 PM on Thursday and Friday, and 2 PM Saturday in the field house auditorium. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.

Little Kickers Soccer - Starts Saturday, Sept 11
Little Kickers Soccer starts up this Saturday and continues every Saturday through Halloween. The schedule is: 9:30 - 10:30 AM - 4-year-olds ...... 10:30 - 11:30 AM - 5 and 6-year olds ...... 11:30 - 12:30 PM - 7,8 and 9-year olds.

Friends of Holstein Park - Thursday, Sept 16 6:30 PM
The Friends of Holstein Park have two big events coming up in the next month, Circus in the Park (Sept. 25-26) and the Bucktown Apple Pie Contest (Oct. 10).

If you can volunteer on any of those days, your help will be much appreciated. This is the last monthly meeting before showtime. So please stop by. A lot of work goes into staging these events, and it's easier if the load is spread around. Plus, it's fun.

And it's a twofer: The CAPS community police meeting is 7 PM the same night in the auditorium.

Can't make the meeting? Email Michelle at mrwherle@gmail.com to volunteer.

"Ghostbusters" Movie in the Park - Friday, Sept 17
The last movie in the park will be "Ghostbusters" --and this one isn't at Holstein or Churchill Park, but nearby Haas Park (Washtenaw and Fullerton).

The movie begins at dusk (now estimated to be around 7:30 PM). Bring your own lawn chair and picnic basket.

Fall Programs - start Monday, Sept 20
Regular fall programs - notably the After School Program for 6-12 year olds and Moms, Pops and Tots - start their regular schedule Monday and continue until the Christmas break.

There are still a few openings for younger children (ages 18-months to 4) in selected programs. Call Megan at the Holstein field house to find out more. 312-742-7554.

Open Gym - Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 - 8:30 PM
Starting Tuesday, September 21, Holstein Park opens its gym for pick-up basketball games or shoot-arounds to adults over 18. This is a good way to connect with one of the teams in our famous 4-on-4 winter basketball league - or form your own team.

There is a one-time fee of $35 to use the gym for the season.

Indoor Soccer - Starts Wednesday, Sept 22
If you've seen the size of our gyms, this may sound crazy. But people are flocking to Holstein Park on Wednesday nights for 3-on-3 indoor soccer. Teams rotate on the floor and stay, or leave, based on who won the last match. There is a one-time fee of $17 for the season.

Circus in the Park - Saturday and Sunday, Sept 25-26
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, step right up to the latest offering in Holstein Park's array of special events: The Midnight Circus brings its collection of acrobats, aerialists, clowns, contortionists and one trained dog to Holstein Park for four shows Saturday (2 PM and 5 PM) and Sunday (1 PM and 4 PM). Tickets are $15 and may be purchased in advance at www.CircusintheParks.com.

Holstein is one of five parks that have banded together to raise money by presenting the circus in a different park every weekend. Other venues include Gompers Park (Sept. 11-12), Welles Park (Sept. 18-19), Portage Park (Oct. 9-10) and Chase Park (Oct. 16-17).

If you can't make it to the Holstein Park shows, visit another park on another weekend. All proceeds are shared by the participating parks.

Visit the Midnight Circus website to learn more. And remember . . . every seat is a front row seat!

And Finally . . .
Save the date: Sunday, October 10 . . . for the 6th annual Bucktown Apple Pie Contest. This will be the biggest and best ever with up to 150 contestants, music by Tangleweed, kids activities, pony rides and, yes . . . square dancing! Go to www.bucktownapplepiecontest.com for rules to enter. May the best baker win.
