Save-the-Date: May 31st: Free Staged Reading of Yasmina's Necklace at The Den Theatre

Yasmina’s Necklace at The Den Theatre
An Exclusive Staged Reading of Rohina Malik’s New Work

Chicago, IL, May 10, 2011--With valleys of delighted audiences and mountains of critical acclaim, playwright Rohina Malik is proud to present her second work, Yasmina’s Necklace. A finalist at the Ignition Festival and member of the Goodman Theatre’s Playwright’s Unit, Malik presented her one-woman play Unveiled to sold out theaters three times over--first at 16th Street Theatre, then at Victory Gardens Theater and Next Theater/Evanston. Directed by Henry Godinez in December 2009, Malik developed Yasmina's Necklace through the Goodman Theater's New Stages series. The Den Theatre is excited to present an exclusive sneak peak reading of Yasmina's Necklace at the end of this month.

Yasmina’s Necklace interweaves the contemporary struggles of two Muslim families who anxiously make their home in the United States post-9/11. The play centers around the children of these families: Sam, the Puerto Rican-Iraqi son of one family, and Yasmina, the Iraqi Muslim daughter of the other. Together they must bridge the gap between the cultural heritage they were born into and the identities they wish to create for themselves. The play takes on issues of coming of age, learning to love, and finding a place for oneself in a larger human family regardless of ethnicity or race.

Alongside co-producer Esteban Andres Cruz, Ryan Martin of The Den Theatre will be opening his doors to the public for a free staged reading of Yasmina’s Necklace Tuesday, May 31st, at 7 pm. The event will feature veteran actors Sean Sinitski, Isabel Quintero, Esteban Andres Cruz, Tom Hickey, Susaan Jamshidi, Kamal Hans, and director Coya Paz. A pre-show introduction will start off the event, followed by a post-show Q&A held in the cafe/lobby area of the theatre. The Q&A will be casual and conversational; audience members will be able to mingle with Malik and the other cast members while enjoying light refreshments. Seating is limited, please RSVP to yasminasnecklacetheden@gmail.com.
