Gorilla Tango Theatre presents the Midwest premiere of HAMLETTES by Patrick Shaw
Chicago, IL (October 12 - October 26, 2010): This Fall, Gorilla Tango theatre presents HAMLETTES by Patrick Shaw, directed by Jeffrey Gardner. HAMLETTES investigates the collision between identity, control, art, and hormones as three pre-teen girls attempt to rehearse Shakespeare's classic tragedy, performing Tuesdays at 8pm, October 12 - 26, 2010, at Gorilla Tango Theatre, 1919 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago 60647. Tickets are $12; to purchase tickets call 773-598-4549 or visit www.gorillatango.com.
HAMLETTES follows a trio of 'tween girls as they attempt to rehearse Shakespeare's Hamlet. As the play progresses, the girls are ensnared more and more by the play, until they finally decide to rehearse by immersion, never dropping character. As they descend deeper into the play, the simultaneous discoveries of love, identity, and art lead to devastating results.
HAMLETTES was workshopped by Full Stop Collective in New York City, and was critically acclaimed at it's performance in the 2010 New York Fringe Festival, described as "a tale of adolescent angst... employing a clever marriage of Elizabethan poetry and modern tween-speak. "(http://www.nytheatre.com/), " If the title HAMLETTES evokes thoughts of, “Oh, wow, that sounds really cute,”you’re in for a major surprise. It is an insightful and creative modern adaptation..." (http://pxpplog.blogspot.com), and "...brilliant use of found text...Whether you know the source material or not (come on, you know it), Hamlettes will capture your fancy." (http://newyorktheatrereview.blogspot.com/)
The HAMLETTES cast features Jill Oliver as Alexandra, Martine Moore as Chloe, and
Alex Young as Ophelia. The show will be directed by Jeffrey Gardner. The design
team includes Betsey Palmer: Stage manager, and Becky Grajeda: Sound Design.
